Vartivar 2010

Vartivar festivities will take place at LYNX LAKE beginning at 12:00Noon following a short badarak that will be conducted at 10:00AM – 11:00AM at St. Apkar Armenian Church in Scottsdale. Lynx Lake is located in the cool mountain forest just a few miles east of Prescott. The basic directions are as follows: I-17 North toward Flagstaff Take exit 262 toward AZ-69 N/Prescott/Cordes Lakes Rd/Arcosanti Merge onto AZ-69 N Turn left at Walker Rd Turn left at Lynx Lake Come and participate with your St. Apkar Church family. Bring a side-dish for the pot-luck. The BBQ meat will be provided by the AMen Organization and the ACYO youth members. Der Zacharia is looking forward to seeing all of you there! Der Nareg and Ygn Matarian from Los Angeles visiting our Arizona

It was a pleasure to have Der Nareg and Ygn Matarian from Los Angeles visiting our Arizona community and thanks to Der Nareg for conducting the Holy Divine Liturgy at St Apkar Armenian Church on Sunday June 27. Der Nareg and Ygn Matarian were able to spend time with the Church choir during the weekend visit.

The 83rd Annual Assembly of the Western Diocese

The 83rd Annual Assembly of the Western Diocese held in Burbank, California was very well attended. The Arizona delegates accompanying Der Zacharia representing St Apkar were Margaret Ehramjian, Victoria Manoogian and Suzie Grigorians. We would like to extend congratulations to Dr Stepan Ovanessoff and Dr Rafy Safarian for receiving the Archbishop’s Award at the Banquet held on April 30, 2010.

Visiting Andre Agassi Foundation in Las Vegas

Der Zacharia visited with the Andre Agassi Foundation in Las Vegas, Nevada in March and was gifted Andre’s latest book, an autobiography titled Open with his autograph that was presented to the AZACYO membership.

Merelotz and Martyrs’ Day Information

Dear Armenian families of Arizona, the USA and the world,

In honor of the lost lives of our brothers & sisters in 1915, we would like to extend a special opportunity to you to become involved with the interior development of St. Apkar Armenian Apostolic Church by creating together with u a living memorial in our martyrs’ honor. This fundraising effort is to purchase a church pew to begin the process. This specific church pew will be to honor our victims with a dedication plaque on it where their spirits will live on forever.
If you are interested in making a donation, make your checks payable to St. Apkar Armenian Church with “April 24 church pew” on the memo line. You may call the Church office @ 480-451-8171 for further details. The dedications of the special donors will be made public on Sunday April 25. All are invited to participate and commemorate the memory of our beloved martyrs at the Divine Liturgy to be conducted on that Sunday. Madagh will be available in Melikian Hall following the Church service.

Also, let us revive and keep the tradition of Merelotz continuing. If you wish to have prayers said at the grave sites of your deceased loved ones, please call me as soon as possible to schedule a convenient time to meet at the cemetery.

Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday, Dzaghgazart, is the feast of Christ’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem.

Having raised Lazarus from the dead, Christ was hailed by the people as the Messiah and new King of Israel.

By entering Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, the Old Testament prophesy was fulfilled.

The people hailed him shouting “Hosannah! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” And they spread flowers and palm branches before Him.

Today, we celebrate Christ’s entry into Jerusalem with a procession around the Church, holding palms and decorated long candles.

Ladies Society

The Ladies Society of Saint Apkar once again worked very hard during the months of November and December, with the preparation of all the delicious food for the Armenian Fest, and the New Year’s Eve Party. Both events were very successful with everybody’s hard work and full dedication. On Saturday, December 19th, we celebrated our annual Christmas Party at Camarones Mexican Restaurant. We all exchanged gifts and had a wonderful time. It was a fun event with a lot of cheer and laughter. On Saturday, February 6th, we had our Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance at the Melikian Hall, with entertainment by Mark DJM3. The hall was decorated beautifully, and the food was once again delicious, thanks to all the ladies who helped make this event a special one.
